The European Petroleum Survey Group (EPSG) is a defunct organization that previously maintained a registry of these codes. While the organization no longer exists, the EPSG code system remains widely used in the geospatial industry to ensure consistent and unambiguous communication about geographic data.

An EPSG code is a numerical identifier that uniquely represents a specific CRS. This CRS defines how locations on Earth are represented in a digital format. It includes parameters such as the geodetic datum, the ellipsoid, the map projection, and units of measurement. For instance, EPSG:4326 is a very common code referring to the WGS 84 coordinate system, which uses latitude and longitude coordinates.

Using EPSG codes is crucial for interoperability between different software systems and for accurately transforming data between various CRSs. When working with geospatial data, such as maps, satellite imagery, or survey data, specifying the correct EPSG code ensures that the data is interpreted and displayed correctly. Many geographic information systems (GIS) software and libraries rely on EPSG codes for managing and processing spatial information. The International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) now maintains the EPSG Geodetic Parameter Dataset.
