EPDMmembraane, often simply referred to as EPDM membrane, is a type of synthetic rubber material composed of ethylene, propylene, and a thixotropic diene component. The diene units provide cross‑linking sites that enhance the durability of the polymer under ultraviolet radiation, ozone, and weathering conditions. EPDM membranes are produced through latex or extrusion processes, with the latex variant being the most common in roofing applications due to its ease of handling and installation.

The primary use of EPDM membranes is in flat and low‑slope roofing systems for commercial and institutional buildings worldwide. Their water‑tightness, elasticity, and resistance to solar‐induced degradation make them suitable for environments subject to temperature extremes and chemical exposure. In addition to roofing, EPDM membranes are employed in expanding foam seals, automotive weatherstripping, and gasket manufacturing. The flexibility of EPDM allows it to be laminated to substrates such as bitumen, fiberglass, or polyethylene to improve adhesion and structural integrity.

Key advantages of EPDMmembraane include a typical lifespan of 20–30 years, low maintenance requirements, and compatibility with a variety of adhesives and sealants. Disadvantages may involve a relatively high initial cost and susceptibility to accidental damage from punctures or high‑heat sources. EPDM was first introduced in the early 1950s, and the evolution of synthetic rubber technologies has since refined its composition for specific applications. Current standards for roofing membranes, such as the ASTM F2318 and ISO 21920, provide performance criteria that EPDM products must meet to ensure reliability and safety.
