EPALstandard

EPALstandard refers to the specification framework maintained by the European Pallet Association (EPAL) for wooden pallets used in European logistics. The standard chiefly governs the EUR-pallet, a pallet sized 1200 by 800 millimeters designed for four-way forklift access, and it defines construction requirements, tolerances, load-bearing capabilities, and labeling to ensure interchangeability across users and countries.

EPAL is a registered association (EPAL e.V.) that coordinates a licensing system for pallet production and refurbishment. Only licensed pallet producers may manufacture EPAL pallets, and licensed repairers may refurbish damaged pallets to EPAL specifications. Pallets manufactured under the standard bear a visible EPAL mark along with the country of manufacture and a license number, enabling traceability and quality control.

A key feature of EPALstandard is its emphasis on a long, reusable service life within a pallet-pooling and resale network. The system promotes repair and re-use, with a network of certified facilities across Europe and beyond, to extend pallet life, reduce waste, and stabilize costs for users. The standardized dimensions and labeling also support reliable cross-border handling and interoperability in diverse supply chains.

In practice, EPALstandard is widely applied across industries that rely on pallets for transport and storage. While closely associated with the EUR-pallet, the EPAL quality system encompasses related practices and configurations, all aligned to maintain consistency, safety, and efficiency in intercompany logistics.
