Döbfékeket

Döbfékeket is a Hungarian term that translates to "drum brakes" in English. Drum brakes are a type of brake where the brake shoe expands outwards against the inner surface of a rotating drum, which is attached to the wheel. This friction slows down or stops the vehicle.

The mechanism of a drum brake involves a wheel cylinder, brake shoes, and a brake drum. When the brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is applied to the wheel cylinder. This pressure forces pistons within the cylinder outward, pushing the brake shoes against the inner surface of the rotating drum. The resulting friction generates heat and converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into thermal energy, thus slowing it down.

Drum brakes were a common type of braking system in automobiles for many decades, particularly on rear wheels or as the sole braking system on older vehicles. They are generally considered less effective than disc brakes, especially under heavy braking or in wet conditions, due to issues with heat dissipation and potential for brake fade. However, they are often simpler in design and can be more cost-effective to manufacture. In modern vehicles, drum brakes are less frequently used as the primary braking system for the front wheels, but they can still be found on the rear wheels of some smaller cars, trucks, and as parking brakes. Their operation relies on the outward expansion of curved brake shoes within a rotating drum.
