Dukesklassifiseringen is a staging system used to classify the extent of rectal cancer. Developed by Alfred G. Dukes in 1930, it has been a foundational tool in understanding and communicating the progression of the disease. The original classification was based on the depth of tumor invasion and the presence of lymph node involvement.

The original Dukes classification has been modified over time to provide more detailed information and better predict prognosis. Modern adaptations, such as the Astler-Coller modification, further refine the staging by incorporating more specific criteria. The system generally categorizes rectal cancers into stages A, B, C, and D, with each stage representing increasing severity. Stage A typically indicates a tumor confined to the rectal wall, while Stage D suggests distant metastasis.

The Dukes classification is crucial for treatment planning. It helps oncologists determine the most appropriate course of action, which can include surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these. Accurate staging also plays a vital role in research, allowing for standardized comparisons of treatment outcomes across different studies and institutions.
