Dualpilot

Dualpilot is a control architecture and software framework that enables two operators to share supervisory and direct control of a single automated system. It is designed to increase safety and reliability by distributing workload, providing cross-checks, and maintaining continuity in the event of operator error or failure. The concept is used across autonomous vehicles, robotic platforms, and flight-assistance systems.

In operation, Dualpilot separates roles into input providers and a coordination core. Each operator can input commands or supervisory guidance, but a central arbitration module reconciles inputs according to predefined rules and current system state. The framework implements role assignment, input synchronization, and conflict resolution, along with timeouts and watchdogs to trigger safe fallback modes if an operator becomes unavailable.

Typical implementations employ dual feedback loops, redundant sensors, and a common state estimator. Communication between interfaces and the coordination core uses rate-limited channels and digital handshakes to prevent commands from being processed out of sequence. Safety mechanisms include authority control, mutual monitoring, and an independent watchdog that can initiate safe-stop procedures.

Applications span unmanned aerial systems, remote-operated marine vessels, industrial automation, and simulation environments used for training and testing.
