Druckformen

Druckformen, also known as printing plates, are essential components in many commercial printing processes. They are prepared surfaces that carry the ink intended for the final printed image. The design of the print is transferred onto the Druckform, and then the ink is applied to this form and subsequently transferred to the paper or other substrate. The specific type of Druckform used depends on the printing method, such as offset lithography, flexography, gravure, or screen printing.

In offset lithography, the most common commercial printing technique, Druckformen are typically thin metal plates, often made of aluminum. The printing surface of these plates is treated to be either ink-receptive or ink-repellent in different areas, corresponding to the image and non-image areas of the design. These plates are mounted onto cylinders within the printing press, where they pick up ink and transfer it to a rubber blanket, which then prints onto the paper.

Flexographic Druckformen are usually made of a resilient material, often rubber or photopolymer. They have a raised image area, similar to letterpress printing, allowing for direct or indirect transfer of ink to the substrate. This method is widely used for printing on packaging materials like plastic films, cardboard, and labels.

Gravure printing utilizes a Druckform in the form of a cylinder that has been engraved with a large number of small cells. These cells hold the ink, which is then transferred to the paper as the cylinder rotates. This process is known for producing high-quality, continuous tone images and is often used for magazines, catalogs, and decorative laminates. Screen printing uses a stencil-like Druckform, where ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto the substrate, creating a layer of ink that can be quite thick.
