Druckerbefehle, also known as print commands, are instructions sent from a computer to a printer to initiate and control the printing process. These commands can range from simple requests to print a document to complex instructions regarding print quality, paper size, collation, and other advanced settings.

Operating systems typically provide a user interface for sending basic print commands, allowing users to select a printer, number of copies, and other common options. For more granular control, users or applications can utilize printer control languages (PCLs) or printer description languages (PDLs) like PostScript or PCL itself. These languages contain specific codes that dictate everything from character placement and font selection to graphics rendering and page layout.

The process usually begins when an application generates a document and then sends it to the operating system's print spooler. The spooler manages print jobs, queuing them up for the printer. Before sending the job to the printer, the spooler often converts the document into a format the printer understands, often a PDL. The printer then interprets these commands and renders the document on paper.
