Drobnoziarnistej (Czech for "fine-grained") refers to a geological term describing a specific type of sedimentary rock texture characterized by very small grain sizes. This texture is typically observed in rocks where the individual mineral or rock fragments are so fine that they cannot be distinguished with the naked eye, often requiring microscopic examination for detailed analysis. Fine-grained rocks are commonly formed through the deposition of particles in calm water environments, such as deep marine basins, lakes, or through the gradual accumulation of volcanic ash.

In sedimentology, fine-grained rocks are classified based on their grain size, with silt and clay being the most common constituents. Silt-sized particles range from 0.002 to 0.0625 millimeters in diameter, while clay particles are even finer, typically less than 0.002 millimeters. These rocks often exhibit features such as laminations, ripples, or fossilized remains of microscopic organisms, depending on their depositional environment.

Common examples of fine-grained sedimentary rocks include shale, siltstone, and mudstone. Shale, in particular, is known for its thin, parallel layers and tendency to split easily along these planes. These rocks play a significant role in petroleum geology, as they often serve as source rocks for hydrocarbons due to their high organic content and fine pore spaces that trap hydrocarbons.

The study of fine-grained rocks is essential in understanding past environmental conditions, such as climate and sea-level changes, as well as in identifying potential resources like oil and gas. Their analysis involves techniques such as petrographic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and geochemical testing to determine mineral composition, depositional history, and diagenetic alterations.
