Originating as a portmanteau of drink and emitter, the term gained traction in discussions about automation and quantified mixology during the 2010s. It is used primarily to describe either a standalone dosing device or a multi-channel module designed to work with existing beverage service or testing systems.

Design and operation centers on accurate liquid handling. A drinkmitter may employ peristaltic pumps or syringe pumps, with valves, flow sensors, and a microcontroller or programmable logic controller. Units are calibrated to deliver defined volumes, and many offer recipe storage, flow-rate calibration, temperature control, and cleaning or sanitation routines.
