Dopingukontrolli

Dopingukontrolli refers to the system and procedures used to detect and deter the use of prohibited substances and methods in sport. Its aim is to preserve fair competition and protect athlete health by ensuring that performances reflect true athletic abilities rather than pharmacological enhancement. Doping control operates under international standards set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and is implemented by national and international anti-doping organizations and sport bodies.

Testing can occur in-competition and out-of-competition. Athletes may be selected randomly or through planned programs, including the use of a whereabouts system that requires athletes to disclose their location to enable out-of-competition testing. Collected samples—primarily urine, and in some cases blood—are sent to accredited laboratories under strict chain-of-custody procedures. Samples are often split into A and B bottles; the A sample is analyzed first, and the B sample may be opened if the A sample tests positive or if an athlete requests verification. Results are communicated to the athlete and the relevant sport federation, which may impose provisional or final sanctions if a violation is confirmed.

Substances and methods prohibited by doping rules are listed on the WADA Prohibited List, updated annually. The list covers categories such as stimulants, hormones and peptide hormones, metabolic modulators, diuretics and masking agents, narcotics, cannabinoids, and methods such as blood doping and gene doping. Penalties range from warnings to suspensions and bans, affecting eligibility for competition and prize eligibility. Oversight emphasizes transparency, due process, and adherence to standards such as ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for laboratories and the International Standard for Testing and Investigations (ISTI).
