Dopierung

Dopierung is a term that appears in German-language technical writing, but it is generally considered a misspelling or variant of the standard term Dotierung. Dotierung refers to the intentional introduction of impurities, or dopants, into a material to alter its properties, most commonly its electrical conductivity.

In semiconductor technology, dotieren or dotierung is essential for creating conductive channels and controlling charge carrier type. Donor dopants introduce extra electrons to produce n-type material, while acceptor dopants create holes for p-type material. Common examples include phosphorus or arsenic as donors and boron as an acceptor in silicon. The resulting p–n junctions form the basis of diodes, transistors, and many integrated circuits.

Doping can be accomplished by several methods. Diffusion involves exposing the material to a dopant source at high temperature, allowing atoms to migrate into the surface. Ion implantation shoots dopant ions into the substrate with controlled energy and dose, offering precise depth profiles. Epitaxial growth can incorporate dopants during the deposition of crystalline layers to form doped regions with defined characteristics.

Outside electronics, dotierung or doping also appears in materials science and chemistry, where impurities are added to modify properties such as color, hardness, diffusion behavior, or corrosion resistance. Doping levels are typically expressed as concentrations (atoms per cubic centimeter or as a percentage) and are crucial for device performance and reliability.
