Dongarras

Dongarras is a small, unincorporated community located in the southeastern region of the U.S. state of Georgia. Situated in the southern part of Oglethorpe County, the area is primarily rural and characterized by its agricultural landscape, with farmland and scattered residences. Dongarras is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area, though it retains a distinctly rural identity due to its distance from major urban centers.

The community’s name is believed to derive from the Cherokee word *dungara*, meaning "sand bar" or "sandy place," reflecting the region’s terrain. The area was historically inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Cherokee, before European settlement. After the removal of Native American tribes in the 19th century, the land was gradually developed for farming, particularly cotton and later peaches, which remain significant crops in the region.

Dongarras lacks formal municipal services, relying instead on county-level governance for infrastructure, education, and emergency services. The nearest incorporated towns, such as Lexington and Bogart, provide some commercial and governmental amenities. The community is accessible via rural roads, with the closest major highway being U.S. Route 29, which runs through nearby areas.
