Atlanta

Atlanta is the capital and most populous city of the U.S. state of Georgia, located in the southeastern United States. The city anchors the Atlanta metropolitan area, a large and economically diverse region.

Founded in 1837 as a railroad junction, Atlanta grew rapidly, becoming a central rail hub during the 19th century. It suffered extensive destruction during the Civil War but was rebuilt and emerged as a center of commerce and industry. In the late 20th century, it hosted the 1996 Summer Olympics and became known for civil rights leadership, including the home of Martin Luther King Jr.

Today Atlanta is a major national and international business center, with strengths in transportation, media, logistics, technology, film and television production, and finance. The city hosts the headquarters of several Fortune 500 companies and is a focal point for the Southeast.

Cultural institutions include the High Museum of Art, the Fox Theatre, and a thriving music scene. Notable attractions include the World of Coca-Cola, the Georgia Aquarium, and the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.

Prominent universities include Georgia Tech, Emory University, and Georgia State University, contributing to a large student population and research activity.

Atlanta is a major transportation hub; Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is one of the busiest in the world. The city is served by the MARTA rail and bus system, with interstate highways connecting outward.
