Displacer

A displacer is an agent or device that causes displacement, meaning movement from an original position or change of state. The term is used across disciplines to describe components or concepts that shift matter, energy, or representations in space or form. Displacers can be physical mechanisms, software tools, or abstract operators.

In engineering and mechanics, a displacer often refers to a moving element that relocates gas or liquid within a system. A well-known example is the displacer in a Stirling engine, a lightweight piston or cavity that shuttles the working gas between hot and cold ends of the engine. The displacer promotes heat exchange and pressure differences but does not directly perform net work; the power piston provides work output. Variants of displacers appear in other closed-cycle machines and displacement pumps, where their primary role is to separate flow or phase regions rather than generate energy themselves.

In computer graphics, a displacer modifier or tool uses a texture or height map to push the surface of a model along its normals. This produces visible relief or surface variation without altering the underlying topology, effectively displacing vertices in a controlled, texture-driven manner.

In mathematics and physics, the displacement operator describes the translation of a function or state in space. Applied to wavefunctions or signals, it moves the object by a vector a, such that the translated state preserves its form while shifting position. The operator is typically unitary, meaning it conserves overall amplitude.
