The process is typically iterative and cross-disciplinary, drawing on research, ideation, prototyping, and evaluation.

Common stages vary by field but generally include discovery or research, problem framing, ideation, prototyping, testing, and implementation. Discovery involves user and market research to understand needs, constraints, and opportunities. Definition translates findings into a clear brief and design criteria. Ideation generates multiple concepts. Prototyping creates tangible representations of ideas for exploration and validation. Testing collects user feedback and performance data. Implementation oversees production or rollout, followed by post-launch evaluation and refinement.

Many frameworks exist, such as design thinking and the Double Diamond model, emphasizing divergent and convergent thinking across stages. The process is often iterative rather than strictly linear, with cycles between exploration and refinement as new information emerges. Tools include personas, user journeys, wireframes, mockups, prototypes, and design specifications.

Collaborative roles include designers, engineers, product managers, researchers, marketers, and end users. Documentation (briefs, artefacts, and specifications) provides alignment and a record of decisions. The resulting outputs may be physical products, digital interfaces, services, or built environments.

Key challenges include balancing desirability, feasibility, and viability; managing constraints like budget and time; ensuring accessibility and ethical considerations; and measuring success through user satisfaction, adoption rate, and impact on business goals. The design process remains context-driven and adaptable to different industries and project scopes.
