Digitaalilaskimet, known in English as digital calculators, are electronic devices designed for performing mathematical calculations. They operate by processing numerical input through integrated circuits and displaying the results on a digital screen. Unlike mechanical calculators, digital calculators rely on electronic components and software to execute arithmetic and often more complex functions.

Early digital calculators emerged in the mid-20th century, evolving from electromechanical devices. The development of transistors and later integrated circuits dramatically reduced their size, cost, and increased their power. This led to the proliferation of handheld calculators, making complex calculations accessible to a much wider audience.

Digital calculators come in various forms. Basic models perform simple arithmetic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Scientific calculators offer a wider range of functions, including trigonometry, logarithms, exponents, and statistical analysis, making them essential tools for students and professionals in STEM fields. Financial calculators are specialized for business and finance, equipped with functions for loan payments, interest rates, and investment analysis. Graphing calculators can plot functions, solve equations, and perform advanced mathematical operations.

The operation of a digital calculator involves inputting numbers and operators using a keypad. Internal processors then interpret these inputs and execute the corresponding algorithms. The results are presented as numerical digits on a liquid crystal display (LCD) or light-emitting diode (LED) screen. Modern calculators may also feature larger displays, memory functions, and connectivity options. They are powered by batteries or solar cells.
