Differentiaalilähtöjen, known in English as differential outputs, refers to a signaling method where information is transmitted using two complementary signals. These signals are equal in amplitude but opposite in polarity. The receiver interprets the difference between these two signals, rather than the absolute voltage of a single signal. This approach offers several advantages over single-ended signaling, making it a common choice in many electronic applications.

One of the primary benefits of differential outputs is their enhanced noise immunity. External noise sources, such as electromagnetic interference, tend to affect both complementary signals equally. Because the receiver is looking at the difference between the two signals, any common-mode noise is effectively canceled out. This makes differential signaling particularly useful in environments with high electrical noise or when transmitting signals over longer distances.

Another advantage is the ability to achieve higher signaling speeds. The complementary nature of the signals allows for faster transitions, as the signals are moving in opposite directions. This is crucial for high-speed data transmission applications like USB, Ethernet, and HDMI. Furthermore, differential signaling reduces electromagnetic emissions. The opposing currents in the two conductors tend to cancel each other out, minimizing the radiated noise. This is important for meeting regulatory requirements and preventing interference with other electronic devices. Various differential signaling standards exist, each tailored for specific applications and performance requirements.
