Diaphorencyrtus

Diaphorencyrtus is a genus of small parasitic wasps in the family Encyrtidae (order Hymenoptera). The genus comprises numerous species that are principally egg parasitoids of scale insects (Coccoidea) and related hemipterans. Adults are tiny, typically a few millimeters long, with the compact body shape common to encyrtid wasps.

Ecology and life cycle: Female Diaphorencyrtus lay eggs in the eggs or young instars of scale insects on plant hosts. The larvae develop inside the host, eventually pupating, with adults emerging to repeat the cycle. Most species are endoparasitoids of scale insects, and their development is closely tied to the timing and abundance of their hosts. They are often found in agricultural and horticultural settings where scale pests occur.

Distribution and use in biological control: Diaphorencyrtus species occur in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Several species have been utilized in classical biological control programs against pest scales, with Diaphorencyrtus aligarhensis being the most widely cited example for controlling the cottony cushion scale, Icerya purchasi, in citrus and other crops. Introductions and releases have occurred in multiple countries, and the success of releases varies with climate, host availability, and interactions with other natural enemies and environmental conditions.
