Dialyysimenettelyä

Dialyysimenettelyä is the Finnish term for dialysis, a medical treatment that filters waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys are no longer functioning properly. This process is essential for individuals with end-stage renal disease or severe kidney failure, as it artificially performs the functions of healthy kidneys. There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Hemodialysis involves using a machine to circulate the patient's blood through an artificial kidney, called a dialyzer. Blood is drawn from the patient's body, passed through the dialyzer where it is cleaned, and then returned to the body. This procedure typically takes place in a dialysis clinic or at home and requires access to the bloodstream, often established through a surgically created arteriovenous fistula or graft.

Peritoneal dialysis uses the patient's own peritoneal membrane, the lining of the abdominal cavity, as a natural filter. A sterile dialysis solution is introduced into the abdominal cavity through a catheter, where it absorbs waste products and excess fluid from the blood. After a specific dwell time, the solution is drained out of the body. This method can often be performed at home by the patient or with assistance.

Both dialysis methods aim to restore a balance of electrolytes and minerals in the body, remove toxins, and manage blood pressure. The choice between hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis depends on various factors including the patient's overall health, lifestyle, and personal preference. Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment but does not cure kidney disease.
