Dextensions

Dextensions are modular software components designed to extend the functionality of a host application or system. Each dextension is self-contained, exposing a defined interface and a set of capabilities that the host can discover and invoke. The term is used to describe plug-in like artifacts across diverse ecosystems, emphasizing the dynamic nature of their integration rather than a specific platform.

Typically, a host exposes an extension API and a discovery mechanism. dextensions declare metadata in a manifest, including name, version, author, required host version, and permission scope. They are loaded by the host either at startup or on demand, and follow a lifecycle of installation, activation, deactivation, and removal. Some ecosystems support sandboxing or containerization to limit privileges.

Development and distribution: dextension development targets the host's extension framework using supported languages. Distribution often takes place through official marketplaces or repositories, with versioning and compatibility notes. Hosts may enforce compatibility checks to prevent broken integrations.

Security and governance: Because dExtensions operate with elevated access to host data or features, security considerations are central. Practices include code signing, permission scoping, user consent prompts, and review workflows. Updates are subject to verification, and untrusted extensions can be blocked or rolled back.

Examples and scope: dextensions appear across many domains, including web browsers, integrated development environments, content management systems, and enterprise software suites. The concept emphasizes openness and extensibility while balancing reliability and security.
