Deviantoutlier is a term used in data analysis to refer to data points that are extreme in their value and simultaneously deviate from expected patterns according to a given model. The term is not part of formal statistical nomenclature but is used in some communities to stress the dual nature of such observations.

In practice, a deviating outlier might have two attributes: a univariate extreme value and a large residual indicating poor fit to a predictive model. The first component flags value-based extremity, while the second flags pattern misalignment with relationships among variables. As a result, a deviants outlier stands out both in its raw measurement and in its relation to the model's expectations.

Detection approaches combine univariate outlier tests with regression diagnostics or residual analysis. For multivariate settings, one may compute robust distance measures to assess abnormality in feature space, and examine standardized or studentized residuals for model misfit. A composite scoring approach can flag a data point as a deviants outlier when both value extremity and deviance exceed predefined thresholds.

Applications occur across fields such as finance, engineering, and healthcare, where unusual observations may indicate fraud, sensor faults, or atypical patient records. The label serves to prompt careful investigation rather than automatic exclusion, encouraging analysts to consider data quality, context, and alternative models.

Limitations include dependence on model choice and threshold settings, which can render the designation unstable. Misclassification risk remains, especially when different models or domains yield conflicting assessments. Practitioners typically accompany any label with domain knowledge, data review, and sensitivity analyses to determine appropriate remedial actions.
