Detektorist, also spelled detectorist in English, is the term for a person who uses a metal detector to locate metallic objects buried underground or underwater. The activity spans hobbyists, enthusiasts, and sometimes professionals who work with archaeologists or museums. Common targets include coins, jewelry, military or historical artifacts, and other metal debris.

Equipment and techniques: Detectors use coils and discrimination to distinguish metals; detectors can be handheld; many detektorists carry a pinpointer, shovel or digging tool, a finds pouch, and headphones. Searches are typically conducted in systematic patterns, often in teams, with careful note-taking and GPS mapping. Underwater hunters use buoyancy and scuba gear.

Legal and ethical context: Detektorists usually need permission from landowners; many countries regulate metal detecting on public or protected lands. In some jurisdictions, certain finds must be reported to authorities or recorded with heritage schemes, and there is an emphasis on preserving archaeological context and not removing artifacts from sites.
