Detectorists typically search legally accessible land—fields, beaches, parks—and undertake permission-based detecting on private property. Objects recovered include coins, jewelry, military buttons, artifacts, and scrap metal; discoveries can be intentionally preserved, donated to museums, or registered with local clubs.

Equipment and techniques: Modern metal detectors operate by emitting an electromagnetic field and listening for disturbances caused by metallic objects. Detectorists employ search coils of various sizes, sometimes using waterproof devices for beach or water hunting. Accessories often include a pinpointer for precise location, a digging tool, a finds pouch, and headphones. Detection strategies emphasize discrimination to distinguish trash from relics and careful grid searching.

Community and practice: Detectorists frequently belong to clubs or associations that publish guidelines, host rallies, keep finds registries, and provide education on responsible detecting. They may collaborate with archaeologists or cultural heritage authorities when a site contains significant history.
