Desmodieae

Desmodieae is a tribe of flowering plants in the legume family (Fabaceae), within the subfamily Faboideae. It comprises several genera, with Desmodium, Lespedeza, and Alysicarpus among the best known, and it has a wide distribution across tropical and subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania, extending into some temperate zones.

Members of Desmodieae are typically herbs, shrubs, or woody climbers. Leaves are usually pinnate or trifoliate, often with stipules. Flowers are generally papilionaceous, reflecting the characteristic flower type of many Faboideae, and are arranged in racemes or spikes. A distinctive feature of the tribe is its fruit: the legume typically dehisces into one-seeded segments that detach and frequently adhere to fur or clothing, aiding dispersal. This adhesive seed dispersal is a hallmark of many Desmodieae species.

Systematics within Fabaceae have shifted with molecular phylogenetics. Under the APG IV system, Desmodieae is recognized as a coherent grouping within subfamily Faboideae, though the circumscription of genera has evolved as new data have clarified relationships among members. The tribe is diverse in growth form and habitat, ranging from herbaceous species in grasslands to woody taxa in forests and brush.

Ecology and use: several Desmodieae species are valued in agriculture as forage crops or cover crops to improve soil health and suppress weeds. Others may be weedy or invasive in certain regions. The group contributes to biodiversity in many ecosystems and includes species with various ecological roles and economic importance.
