Deepfakes

Deepfakes are synthetic media in which a person’s appearance and/or voice is replaced with another’s using artificial intelligence. Although the term often refers to manipulated video, it can also apply to audio and still images. The most common methods use generative adversarial networks (GANs) or autoencoders to learn mappings between source and target faces, enabling face swaps, expression reenactment, or lip-syncing. The process typically involves detecting faces, aligning them, training a model on example footage, and synthesizing new frames.

Applications span entertainment and media production, such as visual effects, de-aging, or resurrecting performances, as well as privacy-preserving anonymization. They can also be misused for deception, harassment, or fraud, including non-consensual explicit content and political misinformation. The dual-use nature of the technology has driven ongoing debates about ethics, consent, and accountability.

Detection and defense efforts focus on identifying artifacts and inconsistencies that may indicate synthetic origins. Techniques include forensic analysis of pixel, lighting, and temporal patterns, as well as machine learning detectors trained to distinguish fakes. Countermeasures also involve watermarking, cryptographic signing of source media, and policy-based approaches. However, high-quality deepfakes and rapid advances in synthesis present ongoing challenges for detection and verification.

Regulation and policy responses vary by jurisdiction but commonly address non-consensual pornography, fraud, and defamation. Platforms implement content labeling, removal, and user warnings, while researchers advocate for media literacy and robust verification practices to mitigate harm.
