Deconstruction

Deconstruction is a mode of critical analysis associated with the French philosopher Jacques Derrida that emerged in the late 1960s. It investigates how texts convey meaning and how they often undermine their own claims by revealing internal tensions, ambiguities, and contradictions. Rather than proposing fixed interpretations, deconstruction aims to show how binary oppositions—such as presence/absence, speech/writing, or essence/appearance—are culturally constructed and sustained by precarious hierarchies.

Key concepts include différance, trace, and undecidability. Derrida argued that meaning is never fully present or self-identical; it is deferred and always dependent on other signs. Because every text is embedded in a network of other texts and contexts, readings proliferate, and there is no single ultimate interpretation. Deconstruction emphasizes close reading and attention to the way language displaces, defers, and destabilizes supposed authorities.

Applications and influence: deconstruction has been applied across literary studies, philosophy, law, anthropology, cultural studies, and architecture. It influenced critical approaches such as post-structuralism and has sparked ongoing debate about the nature of meaning, interpretation, and power. Critics describe it as obscurantist or relativist, while supporters argue that it reveals how identities and ideologies are constructed within discourses.
