DeLorme

Delorme is a surname of French origin and may also refer to the DeLorme publishing and mapping company, an American cartography and publishing firm known for its detailed atlas products and early GPS hardware.

The company, often credited as DeLorme Publishing Company, gained prominence for the Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer series, which offered detailed state-level topographic maps and outdoor information for hikers, travelers, and outdoor enthusiasts. In addition to the atlas series, DeLorme published Street Atlas USA and other city atlases, and developed early mapping software and Earthmate handheld GPS devices that combined portable navigation hardware with map data.

In the 2000s, DeLorme expanded its offerings into digital mapping and GPS technology, aligning with growing consumer demand for integrated navigation solutions. In 2016, Garmin Ltd. acquired DeLorme, incorporating its map data and devices into Garmin’s broader navigation products. Since the acquisition, the DeLorme brand has operated as part of Garmin’s consumer navigation portfolio, while the standalone publishing operation has largely ceased. The Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer remains noted in historical discussions of U.S. outdoor mapping and navigation tools.
