Dateringsanalyses (often written as dateringsanalyser in Swedish) are methods used to determine the age of materials or events in geology, archaeology, and paleontology. They can provide relative ages (older or younger than another sample) or absolute calendar ages. The field combines principles from physics, chemistry, and earth sciences to establish temporal frameworks for objects, sites, and sequences.

Common methods include radiometric dating, where the decay of radioactive isotopes yields time since formation or death. Radiocarbon dating (C-14) is widely used for organic remains up to about 50,000 years. Dendrochronology provides calendar years from tree-ring sequences. Luminescence dating (OSL and TL) measures the last exposure of minerals to heat or light. Uranium-series dating is applied to carbonate materials, while potassium-argon and argon-argon dating are used for volcanic rocks and related materials. These methods are often complemented by other techniques to extend age ranges or cross-check results.

The dating process involves careful sampling and pretreatment to avoid contamination, precise laboratory measurements, and statistical interpretation. Results are calibrated against internationally maintained curves (for example, IntCal for radiocarbon) and reported with uncertainties. In practice, researchers frequently use multiple dating methods and stratigraphic information to build robust age models and to understand the context of the findings.

Limitations include sample preservation and diagenetic alterations, reservoir effects that can bias ages, and calibration uncertainties. Open-system behavior and contamination can complicate interpretations. Good practice involves critical assessment of sample quality, transparent reporting of methods and uncertainties, and corroboration with independent data.
