Datenstewards are individuals or roles within an organization's data governance framework responsible for managing data assets to ensure quality, privacy, accessibility, and compliant use. They translate business needs into data definitions and rules, and coordinate between business units and IT to steward data throughout its lifecycle.

Responsibilities include maintaining metadata and data dictionaries, defining and enforcing data quality standards, and implementing governance policies. They manage data ownership assignments, ensure data lineage is documented, monitor data usage, and resolve issues related to data quality, access, and privacy. They collaborate with data owners, data architects, data engineers, and data stewards in other domains to ensure consistency across the enterprise. They may operate within specific data domains such as customers, products, or suppliers, or across cross-domain data.

Types of Datenstewards include business data stewards, who focus on business meaning, rules, and usage; and technical data stewards, who focus on data pipelines, schemas, and technical metadata. Roles are commonly part of a broader data governance program and typically report to a data governance lead or Chief Data Officer.

Skills required include domain knowledge, data modeling, data quality tooling, metadata management, and an understanding of relevant regulations (for example GDPR or HIPAA). Soft skills such as communication, negotiation, and cross-functional collaboration are essential, given the need to balance business needs with compliance and operational constraints.
