DOSkäyttöjärjestelmä, often referred to simply as DOS, is a family of operating systems that were widely used on personal computers in the 1980s and early 1990s. The most prominent version was Microsoft's MS-DOS, which became the de facto standard for IBM PC compatible computers.

DOS is a command-line operating system, meaning users interact with it by typing text commands. It manages the computer's hardware, such as the processor, memory, and storage devices, and provides a platform for running application software. Key functions of DOS include file management (creating, deleting, copying, and moving files), disk formatting, and running programs.

Early versions of DOS were quite rudimentary, offering limited multitasking capabilities and a simple file system. As personal computers evolved, so did DOS, with later versions introducing support for larger hard drives, more memory, and improved user interfaces, although still remaining command-line based.

DOS played a crucial role in the early development of the personal computer industry. Its widespread adoption on IBM PC compatibles paved the way for the dominance of the Windows operating system, which initially ran on top of MS-DOS. While modern operating systems like Windows and macOS have largely superseded DOS, its legacy is evident in many foundational computing concepts and the historical context of personal computing.
