It represents the balance between the amount of oxygen delivered to tissues and the amount of oxygen consumed by those tissues.

The ratio is calculated by dividing the oxygen delivery (DO2) by the oxygen consumption (VO2). Oxygen delivery (DO2) itself is derived from cardiac output (CO), hemoglobin concentration (Hb), oxygen saturation (SaO2), and the partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood (PaO2). Oxygen consumption (VO2) measures the rate at which tissues utilize oxygen, often determined through indirect calorimetry or estimated via clinical parameters.

DO2VO2 is primarily utilized to evaluate tissue perfusion and oxygenation status. A low ratio may indicate inadequate oxygen delivery relative to consumption, which can lead to tissue hypoxia and is often associated with conditions such as shock, anemia, or compromised cardiac function. Conversely, an excessively high ratio might suggest ineffective oxygen utilization or metabolic disturbances.

Clinically, maintaining an optimal DO2VO2 ratio is vital to ensure sufficient tissue oxygenation and prevent organ dysfunction.
