Curtains

Curtains are textile window coverings that hang from a rod or track to regulate light, provide privacy, and contribute to a room’s appearance. They are installed inside or outside of a window frame and come in many fabrics and styles. The term is often used interchangeably with drapes in everyday speech, though distinctions vary by region and fabric weight.

Common curtain fabrics include cotton, linen, silk, wool, velvet, and synthetics such as polyester and nylon. Many curtains have linings or backings—such as a blackout or thermal lining—to enhance light control and insulation. Hanging options include rod-pocket, tab-top, grommet, and pleated header styles.

Curtains are often categorized by light control: sheer or semi-sheer fabrics let light pass while preserving some privacy; blackout curtains block most light; and thermal or lined curtains improve insulation and may reduce heat transfer.

Installation involves choosing a rod or track, mounting brackets, and selecting a length and width to create the desired fullness. Typically curtains extend past the window opening and may reach the sill or floor. A common guideline is to measure window width and add 1.5 to 2 times for fullness.

Beyond light and privacy, curtains can reduce glare on screens, dampen exterior noise, and influence a room’s acoustics. They also contribute to interior design, with color, pattern, and texture shaping the space.

Maintenance varies by fabric. Cotton or polyester curtains may be machine washed; silk and delicate fabrics often require dry cleaning. Always follow manufacturer care labels. For child safety, avoid long cords; many modern designs use cordless operation or wand controls.
