Cuesglowing

Cuesglowing is a term used in human–computer interaction and stage design to describe a visual cue that emits a glow or luminescent halo to attract attention or indicate interactivity. The effect creates a surrounding light aura that can be static or dynamic, helping viewers locate controls, objects, or areas of interest within a scene or interface.

The term is a neologism formed from cue and glowing and is used broadly to describe luminous indicators across digital and physical media. In interfaces, cuesglowing is implemented through glow or bloom effects, pulsing animations, or brightened outlines. In hardware, LED indicators or phosphorescent materials produce the visible glow, while in augmented or virtual reality, glow is simulated through post-processing to emphasize interactive elements.

Applications of cuesglowing span digital interfaces, signage, and live performances. In software and websites, it serves to improve discoverability of controls, guide user flow, and support accessibility by making important elements more salient in low-contrast scenes. In signage and theatre, glowing cues signal timing or transitions to audiences and performers.

Design considerations include brightness, color choice, motion, duration, and contrast, balanced to maximize noticeability without causing distraction. Designers should assess accessibility, avoiding excessive brightness for sensitive users and providing non-glowing alternatives when possible. Overuse can lead to desensitization or clutter, particularly on small screens or in bright environments.
