Cownose

The cownose ray is a species of eagle ray in the family Myliobatidae. It is named for the distinctive, bilobed snout that resembles a cow's nose. These rays are found in warm, shallow waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. They typically inhabit coastal areas, bays, and estuaries, often near coral reefs and mangrove forests.

Cownose rays are characterized by their broad, diamond-shaped bodies and long, whip-like tails, which are equipped with a venomous barb used for defense. They have powerful jaws and flattened teeth adapted for crushing the shells of their prey, which primarily consists of mollusks, crustaceans, and small fish. They are often seen in large schools, especially during their migratory periods.

These rays play an important role in their marine ecosystems as both predators and prey. Their feeding habits can influence populations of bottom-dwelling invertebrates. While generally not aggressive towards humans, their venomous barb can inflict a painful wound if the ray feels threatened. Conservation efforts are in place in some areas due to concerns about declining populations, which may be linked to overfishing and habitat degradation.
