Cordmarking

Cordmarking is a ceramic decoration technique in which cords, strings, or fibers are pressed into the surface of unfired clay to create textured impressions. The resulting pattern can range from simple parallel lines to more intricate, fabric-like designs, depending on the width, spacing, and arrangement of the cord used.

Techniques and materials used in cordmarking vary. Traditional cordmarking often employs natural-fiber cords made from materials such as hemp, jute, or sisal, or strips of fabric. The impression is typically made on the surface of wet or leather-hard clay, either during hand-building or after forming a vessel with coils or slabs. A cord-wrapped paddle or rolling implement may also be used to transfer or enhance the pattern, producing regular ridges or cross-hatched textures.

In archaeology, cordmarked pottery refers to vessels whose surfaces display the impressions of cords or fabrics. Cordmarking is a recognized typological marker in many cultural traditions, helping archaeologists identify regional manufacturing practices and estimate relative dates. While especially associated with prehistoric and indigenous ceramic traditions in various parts of the world, cord-marked surfaces are noted in both ancient and more recent contexts as a practical or decorative method of surface treatment.

Beyond archaeology, cordmarking remains a common technique in contemporary pottery and ceramics for adding tactile interest and surface variation. It can be used alone or in combination with other decorating methods, and is valued for its ability to convey a handmade, historic, or culturally resonant aesthetic.
