Contravallation
Contravallation is a term used in siege warfare to denote a line of fortifications constructed by besieging forces around a fortress or town to prevent relief or breakout. It is typically built outside the besieged works, opposite to the fortress’s walls, and runs in conjunction with the circumvallation, the inner line protecting the siege works from sorties. The two lines together form an encirclement that isolates the defender from outside help.
The contravallation served to block external relief columns, disrupt corridors of communication with the surrounding landscape,
Historically, contravallations were a common feature of early modern European siegecraft, especially in 16th–18th century conflicts
