Congiopodus

Congiopodus is a genus of fish belonging to the family Congiopodidae, commonly known as pigfishes or roughies. These fish are found in the southern oceans, including the waters around Australia, New Zealand, and South America. They are characterized by their deep bodies, large heads, and small, protractile mouths. Their skin is thick and leathery, often with rows of bony plates, giving them a rough appearance.

Species within the genus Congiopodus are typically benthic, meaning they inhabit the seafloor. They are often found in rocky reefs, kelp forests, and on sandy or muddy bottoms. Their diet consists mainly of small invertebrates such as crustaceans, mollusks, and echinoderms, which they forage for using their specialized mouths. Congiopodus species are generally solitary and can be quite territorial.

Several species are recognized within the Congiopodus genus. Congiopodus leucogrammus, the common pigfish, is widespread in southern Australian waters. Congiopodus chrus (also known as the banded pigfish) is found around New Zealand and southeastern Australia. Another notable species is Congiopodus peruvianus, native to the waters off Peru. These fish are not typically targeted by commercial fisheries but are sometimes caught by recreational anglers. Their flesh is considered edible.
