ConfickerC

ConfickerC is a variant of the Conficker computer worm, also known as Downadup. It first appeared in late 2008 and quickly became one of the most widespread malware infections. ConfickerC is notable for its sophisticated propagation methods, primarily exploiting a vulnerability in the Windows Server service. This allowed it to spread rapidly across networks, both internal and external, without requiring user interaction.

Once a system was infected, ConfickerC would attempt to download and execute additional malicious code from command and control servers. This often involved turning the infected computer into part of a botnet, which could then be used for various malicious activities such as sending spam, launching denial-of-service attacks, or stealing sensitive information. The worm also employed a robust domain generation algorithm (DGA) to make it difficult for security researchers to track and shut down its command and control infrastructure.

Efforts to combat ConfickerC involved a multi-pronged approach. Security vendors released patches and removal tools, and organizations like Microsoft, along with various law enforcement agencies, launched significant initiatives to disrupt the botnet. Despite these efforts, ConfickerC infections persisted for a considerable time, highlighting the challenges in eradicating widespread malware. Its legacy is often cited as an example of the potential impact of a well-designed and rapidly spreading worm.
