Compute-optimized refers to a category of computing resources, typically cloud-based virtual machines or server instances, that are specifically designed for workloads requiring high processing power. These resources prioritize CPU capacity and performance, often featuring a larger number of high-frequency CPU cores relative to memory or storage.

The primary use case for compute-optimized instances is for applications that are CPU-intensive. This can include scientific simulations, batch processing, high-performance computing (HPC) tasks, machine learning training that relies heavily on CPU calculations, video encoding and rendering, and large-scale data analytics. When an application's performance bottleneck is directly tied to its ability to execute complex calculations quickly, compute-optimized resources offer a significant advantage.

These instances are characterized by their powerful processors, often the latest generation, and configurations that allow for maximum CPU utilization. While they offer substantial compute power, they may have proportionally less RAM or I/O throughput compared to memory-optimized or storage-optimized instances. Users select compute-optimized resources when their application demands extensive computational power and the cost-effectiveness of dedicating resources to CPU performance outweighs the need for larger amounts of memory or faster disk access.
