Coldsword

Coldsword is a hand-and-a-half sword originating from Europe during the Late Middle Ages. It is characterized by its balanced design, with both the hilt and blade length being somewhat equivalent. This design makes it suitable for use with one or two hands, serving as both an efficient cutting sword and a chopping tool.

The typical coldsword weighed between 900 and 1,200 grams, making it handy, yet still capable of generating considerable force. The smooth and straight edge of the blade allows for a wide range of motion, facilitating slicing and cutting actions.

Its dimensions often range from 84 to 96 centimeters in total length, with the curved or straight blade section accounting for approximately 60 to 70 centimeters of that length. Considered a versatile melee tool, the coldsword serves as a common sight in various historical accounts.

While the terms cold sword or cold steel might be evocative of early modern European cutlery, the name coldsword generally pertains to such swords originating during the Middle Ages, rather than any softer, rust-prone or poisoned varieties. Available historical evidence indicates that several European countries developed their own forms of the coldsword, including distinctly adorned examples.

The numerous historical accounts regarding coldsword usage underscore the importance of this type of sword in European combat traditions. Archaeological findings and artworks from the time period also exist in order to demonstrate its primacy and widespread use in various cultures.
