Cochinchinas

Cochinchinas are a breed of domestic chicken originating from China. They are known for their large size, profuse feathering, and docile temperament. Historically, Cochinchinas were developed for meat production and as ornamental birds. Their distinctive appearance includes abundant feathering on their legs and feet, often referred to as "muffs" or "boots." They come in various color varieties, with buffs, whites, blacks, and partridges being among the most common.

These birds are generally calm and easy to handle, making them popular among hobbyists and families. Cochinchinas are also known for being good mothers, often diligently hatching and raising their chicks. While they are large birds, they are not particularly active foragers and tend to be content with a more confined space. Their egg-laying capabilities are moderate, with hens typically laying a few eggs per week, often in shades of brown. Due to their size and feathering, they are relatively hardy and can tolerate colder climates, though protection from extreme wetness is advisable. Cochinchinas are a heritage breed, and efforts are ongoing to preserve their genetic diversity.
