CoatedN

coatedN is a designation used in materials science to refer to a family of protective coatings engineered with nitrogen-containing layers. It does not denote a single material, but rather a class of surface treatments that combines a substrate with a nitrogen-rich coating architecture. The nitrogen content, bonding environment, and layer structure are tuned to produce targeted combinations of mechanical and chemical properties.

Member systems typically include metal nitride coatings (such as TiN, CrN, VN and related nitrides), nitrogen-doped carbides, and multilayer or nanolaminate stacks that incorporate nitrogen-containing interlayers. The coatings are designed to improve surface hardness, wear resistance, and chemical stability, while allowing selection of specific properties for different service conditions. Nitrogen incorporation can also influence thermal stability and diffusion barriers at elevated temperatures.

CoatedN coatings are usually deposited by physical vapor deposition methods (PVD) like sputtering or arc discharge, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), or atomic layer deposition (ALD). Applications of coatedN coatings span cutting tools, molds, gears, aerospace components, automotive parts, and medical implants, where enhanced surface durability is beneficial.
