It encompasses networking gear, security appliances, storage systems, endpoint devices, and software services that can be configured, monitored, and updated remotely. In a cloud-managed model, devices or agents communicate securely with a cloud controller or management portal, often via APIs, enabling centralized policy enforcement, provisioning, and analytics across distributed sites.

Core features typically include zero-touch provisioning, centralized configuration templates, firmware and policy updates, real-time dashboards, alerting, and role-based access control with auditing. The model is commonly used by managed service providers and large enterprises to scale operations, reduce on-site maintenance, and accelerate deployment.

Common application areas include cloud-managed networking (switches, routers, wireless access points), cloud-managed security (firewalls and UTM appliances), cloud-based IT management (endpoint management, inventory, and software distribution), and cloud-managed printers or storage devices. Notable examples of cloud-managed platforms are Cisco Meraki, Aruba Central, Ubiquiti UniFi, Fortinet FortiCloud, and VMware's SD-WAN/cloud management offerings. Some solutions offer hybrid options that combine cloud management with local controllers for critical paths or regulatory requirements.
