Civilingenjör

Civilingenjör, literally “civil engineer” in Swedish, is a protected title for engineers who have completed a five-year engineering degree, typically resulting in a Master of Science in Engineering (MSc Eng) and totaling about 300 ECTS credits. The degree is awarded by Swedish universities of technology and is widely recognized as a professional qualification for technical leadership. Common institutions include Chalmers University of Technology and the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), as well as Linköping University and Luleå University of Technology.

Ideally the civilingenjör program integrates core mathematics and natural sciences with engineering design, project work, and a research or development thesis. The curriculum is generally more theory- and research-oriented than shorter bachelor-level engineering programs, and many graduates pursue careers in industry, research, or management.

In Sweden, civilingenjör is a distinct track from högskoleingenjör, which is a four-year, applied degree (Bachelor of Science in Engineering). Both paths lead to engineering careers, but civilingenjör is often associated with broader technical competencies and opportunities for leadership roles; the title is supported by professional organizations such as Sveriges Ingenjörer.

Globally, similar titles and education routes exist in other Nordic countries, though exact structures vary; the civilingenjör designation remains a hallmark of engineering education in Sweden and is widely used in industry and public sector contexts.
