Linköping

Linköping is a city in Östergötland County, Sweden, located along the Stångån river about 200 kilometers southwest of Stockholm. It is the administrative center of Östergötland and the seat of the Diocese of Linköping.

Its history goes back to the Middle Ages when a cathedral and a surrounding town grew as a central religious center. The city developed around the church and received its charter in the medieval period.

Linköping is home to Linköping University (LiU), a major research institution with campuses in Linköping and nearby Norrköping. LiU is known for engineering, computer science, natural and health sciences. The city hosts a technology and knowledge driven economy with significant research and development activity and aerospace and defense interests in the region, including facilities connected with Saab AB and related industries.

The most prominent landmark is Linköping Cathedral, a medieval church that remains a key religious and historical site. The historic district Gamla Linköping preserves late 19th- and early 20th-century wooden houses and shops as an open-air museum. The Swedish Air Force Museum (Flygvapenmuseum) is located near Malmen, highlighting aviation history.

Linköping is well connected by rail and road to other Swedish cities, and serves as a hub for regional services. The city continues to develop as a center for education, research, and industry.
