Civicsuddannelse

Civicsuddannelse, a term used in Denmark to describe the education of citizens, refers to instruction aimed at developing knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for participating in political and public life. More generally, civics education encompasses the portion of the school curriculum dedicated to preparing individuals to function as informed, responsible members of a democracy. The exact placement and naming vary by country; it may be taught as a separate subject or integrated into social studies, history or citizenship education, and is often mandatory in certain grades.

Core content includes political systems, the structure and operations of government, elections and political participation, rights and duties of citizens, the rule of law, public institutions, and how policy is made. Modern civics education frequently adds media literacy, digital citizenship, ethical reasoning and an understanding of civil society and civic institutions.

Teaching approaches emphasize active learning: discussions, debates, simulations of parliamentary procedures or elections, service learning, project-based work, and analysis of current events. Assessment can involve exams, portfolios, performance tasks, and evaluation of civic projects. The aim is to cultivate informed, critical thinkers who can participate constructively in public life and contribute to democratic processes.

Implementation varies internationally. In some systems civics is a standalone subject with explicit learning outcomes; in others it is embedded in broader social studies curricula. Debates focus on curriculum neutrality, measurement of civic outcomes, inclusivity, and how to address diverse political viewpoints while fostering civic responsibility.
