Cichlidis

Cichlidis is a term that refers to fish belonging to the family Cichlidae. This diverse family is one of the largest in the vertebrate world, with over 3,000 described species, and many more yet to be discovered. Cichlids are found in freshwater habitats across Africa, Asia, South America, and even parts of North America. They are known for their wide array of shapes, sizes, colors, and behaviors, making them popular subjects for both scientific study and the aquarium hobby.

A defining characteristic of cichlids is their specialized pharyngeal jaw, a secondary jaw located in the throat that aids in processing food. Their breeding behaviors are also remarkably varied, often involving complex courtship rituals, parental care, and territorial defense. Many cichlid species exhibit mouthbrooding, where one or both parents carry their eggs and fry in their mouths for protection.

The family's distribution is particularly notable. African cichlids, especially those from the Great Rift Valley lakes like Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria, are renowned for their explosive speciation and vibrant coloration. South American cichlids encompass a broad range of species, from the popular angelfish and discus to the aggressive oscar.
