Christmastree

Christmastree is a decorated evergreen tree displayed indoors as part of Christmas celebrations. Real trees, typically firs, spruces, or pines, are chosen for their shape and scent. Common species include the Norway spruce (Picea abies), the Nordmann fir (Abies nordmanniana), and the Fraser fir (Abies fraseri). Many households also use artificial trees made of PVC or other materials, which can be reused for multiple seasons.

Traditionally, the modern Christmas tree originated in early modern Germany, where families decorated trees during Advent. The custom spread to other parts of Europe and to North America in the 18th and 19th centuries, gaining broader popularity after public displays and Christmas markets. Trees became widely associated with Christmas rather than with a specific religious denomination.

Decoration typically includes lights, ornaments, garlands, and tinsel. Historically, candles were used to illuminate trees, though electric lights are now standard. A star or an angel topper is common, and gifts are often placed beneath the branches.

Today, Christmas trees are produced and sold worldwide. Real trees require water, care, and occasional pruning, while artificial trees are maintenance-free but may involve environmental trade-offs. After the season, real trees are commonly recycled into mulch or compost, while artificial trees are often stored for reuse or discarded.

Beyond the home, trees are used in public spaces, malls, and town squares as a symbol of Christmas. Practices vary by culture, with some regions emphasizing religious observance and others focusing on secular festivity.
