Catchmentspecific refers to data, models, and management practices that are tailored to the unique characteristics of a particular river catchment—the area of land where rainfall drains to a common outlet. The term emphasizes that hydrological and environmental processes vary markedly between catchments due to differences in climate, geology, soils, vegetation, land use, and human infrastructure. By focusing on a single catchment, analyses can incorporate local boundary conditions and spatial heterogeneity that generic approaches may overlook.

Applications include hydrological modelling, flood risk assessment, water quality management, and ecological restoration. In a catchment-specific approach, boundary delineation, input data (precipitation, evaporation, streamflow), and state variables are prepared at a scale appropriate for the catchment. Models—ranging from distributed physically based to lumped conceptual structures—are calibrated using local observations such as stream gauges and rainfall-runoff events. Outputs can include streamflow timing and volume, sediment and nutrient exports, and the effectiveness of management interventions within the catchment.

Challenges include data availability and quality, parameter non-uniqueness, and transferability to other catchments. Balancing model complexity with data constraints is common, as is addressing scale issues when applying catchment-specific insights to regional planning. The approach is supported by advances in GIS, remote sensing, and high-resolution climate data, which improve delineation, input generation, and validation. Stakeholder involvement and transparent documentation are often essential for adopting catchment-specific results in policy and management.
